Remember the bird boxes that our Cubs made last year? They were hung in the Greenbank Cemetery.
This week Michael, who coordinates the local bird box scheme, and Mike cleaned out the boxes and put up some new ones. Of the 8 boxes they checked, 6 had been used, which is a fantastic uptake rate. The boxes will be used by either blue, great or coal tits. They all usually have one brood a year, and will not use the same nest again. By clearing out the old nests we stop a build up of parasites in the boxes. Hopefully we'll be able to monitor them more closely in 2021 and collect some useful data.
This Spring Michael will take the Cubs and Scouts on walk around the boxes, leaving all about the birds that use them.

Whitehall Scouts are part of the UK’s largest youth organisation.

We change lives by offering 6 to 14 year-olds fun and challenging activities, unique experiences and skills for life.
